Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Today we’re checking out Maplewood, MN! Located about 15-20 minutes away from Minneapolis or Saint Paul, and home to 3M corporate HQ, there's a lot of good stuff going for Maplewood. This tour is gonna be a good one for those of you looking for a place near the Twin Cities!

Pretty good home prices, a diverse demographic, decent schools, and great outdoor spaces, we've already ticked off quite a lot of what makes a great suburb!

Let’s check it out, shall we?!

Maplewood Vibes

Incorporated in 1957 and home to the Corporate HQ of 3M, Maplewood has all 3 vibes - city, suburban, and rural (sort-of). It has a split personality - a city vibe closer to St. Paul and more of a suburban vibe as you get further from St. Paul.

Easily accessible to St. Paul and fairly accessible to Minneapolis. It is a well-established city with about 40k residents. One of the most diverse suburbs in Minnesota and good for young professionals.

According to niche.com, the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale school district, is ranked the #1 most diverse school district in Minnesota. And the 14th (of 11,844) most diverse school district in the country.

Home Price Statistics Maplewood has a pretty diverse housing stock. You can get into a condo/townhome for as low as about $125k and upwards of $330k. With single family homes, a median sales price comes in around $300k. Homes can come in as low as about $200k and upwards of $560k. Your money can go pretty far in Maplewood!

Pros + Cons

Pros:

  • Convenient to both downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis

  • Great outdoor spaces

  • Affordable home prices (slightly lower median sales price than the greater Twin Cities area)

Cons:

  • Schools are good, but not great (according to niche.com)

  • Property crime rates are twice that of the rest of the Twin Cities metro

  • Some of the areas in Maplewood are going to have lower ‘pride of ownership’

  • Maybe a stretch, but if you’re looking for suburban conveniences, you likely need to head to the northern part of Maplewood. If you’re on the southern portion, you might actually go to Woodbury for those conveniences.

To Sum Up Maplewood in Three Points

  • Convenient to both downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis

  • Great outdoor spaces and affordable home prices

  • A good mix of city, suburban, and (slightly) rural vibes
